Your Privacy Matters
Privacy Policy
SafeSpace is committed to protecting your privacy. Here's how we handle your data in alignment with DVCCC policies and Pennsylvania state standards.
Last updated: March 5, 2026
SafeSpace is a project of the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC). We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your information with care. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
What We Collect
SafeSpace collects only what is necessary to connect you with support and resources:
• Anonymous questions you submit (no personal identifiers required)
• Quiz responses (stored locally on your device only — not on our servers)
• General, non-identifying usage data (e.g., page views, feature use)
• Contact information only if you voluntarily provide it when requesting help
How We Protect Your Information
We take every precaution to keep your information secure:
• All data is transmitted using secure, encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS)
• Access to any stored information is restricted to trained counselors and staff
• We follow DVCCC's confidentiality policies, aligned with Pennsylvania state standards and PCADV (Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence) best practices
Confidentiality and Informed Consent
Everything you share with SafeSpace is confidential within legal limits. If you choose to speak with a DVCCC Youth Counselor, you will be informed about:
• What information may be collected
• How it will be used
• When confidentiality may be limited (see Mandatory Reporting below)
Verbal or written consent may be obtained before providing certain services, depending on the nature of your request.
Mandatory Reporting (for Minors)
Under Pennsylvania law, if a counselor learns of suspected abuse or neglect involving someone under 18, they may be required to report it to the appropriate authorities — even if you ask them not to.
This exists to protect young people. Our counselors will always try to explain what's happening and support you through the process.
Service Records, Documentation, and Retention
• Records are only created when needed for service delivery or safety planning
• Documentation follows DVCCC's record-keeping policies
• Files are stored securely and retained only as long as required by law or organizational policy
• Paper documents are shredded and electronic records are securely deleted after the retention period
Your Choices and Control
• Use the "Clear Session" button anytime to delete locally stored data
• Anonymous questions cannot be traced back to you
• You may request deletion of any personally identifiable data by contacting DVCCC
• You are never required to provide personal information to use educational features
Language Access
We strive to provide services and written materials in a language you understand. If you need interpretation or translated documents, please let us know when you contact DVCCC for support.
What We Never Do
• Sell or share your data with advertisers or third parties
• Track your identity across sessions
• Contact you unless you explicitly request it
• Require you to give your name or any identifying information to access resources
Not an Emergency Service
SafeSpace is not monitored 24/7 and is not an emergency response service.
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911 or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
Browser Storage
SafeSpace stores certain data locally on your device to improve your experience. This data never leaves your device and DVCCC cannot access it.
• localStorage: Stores your anonymous question ID (so you can track your questions), theme preference (light/dark mode), and language selection. This data stays until you clear it using "Clear Session" or your browser settings.
• sessionStorage: Stores whether you have seen the safety banner this session. This data is automatically deleted when you close your browser tab.
• Cookies: SafeSpace does not use cookies for tracking. If you sign in as a counselor/admin, a session cookie is used for authentication only.
To delete all locally stored data at any time, use the "Clear Session" button in the site header, or clear your browser's site data through your browser settings.
IP Addresses and Device Information
SafeSpace does not collect or store IP addresses or device identifiers for its own purposes.
However, our hosting provider (Render) may automatically log IP addresses and basic request information as part of standard server operations. These logs:
• Are retained for a limited period (typically 7–30 days) by the hosting provider
• Are used only for security monitoring and troubleshooting
• Are not accessed, used, or stored by DVCCC to identify users
• Cannot be linked to your anonymous questions or activity on SafeSpace
DVCCC does not use any form of device fingerprinting or behavioral tracking.
Data Retention Timelines
We retain data only as long as necessary:
• Local device data (quiz results, preferences): Stays on your device until you clear it — DVCCC never has access to this data
• Anonymous questions: Retained while under review and after being answered, stored according to DVCCC's record-keeping policy
• Contact/help requests: Retained only as long as necessary for service delivery and follow-up
• Server logs (hosting provider): Automatically deleted after 7–30 days by the hosting provider
We do not retain data for marketing purposes. Your data is never sold or shared with third parties.
Limits of Anonymity
SafeSpace is designed to be as anonymous as possible. We do not ask for your name, email, or any identifying information to use the platform.
However, there are rare circumstances where complete anonymity cannot be guaranteed:
• Law enforcement subpoenas or court orders may require our hosting provider to release server information such as IP address logs
• DVCCC does not store, access, or use these logs and would only comply with valid legal process
• If you voluntarily share identifying information in a question or message, a counselor may see it
For maximum privacy, we recommend using your browser's private/incognito mode and avoiding sharing personal details in your questions.
Shared Device Safety
If you use SafeSpace on a shared, school, or public device, someone else may be able to see your browser history or activity.
To protect your privacy on a shared device:
• Use your browser's private or incognito mode — this prevents history from being saved
• Use the "Clear Session" button (in the site header) before you leave — this removes all locally stored data
• Clear your browser history after visiting SafeSpace
• Consider bookmarking a safe website to visit after using SafeSpace
SafeSpace also includes a "Quick Exit" button that immediately takes you to Google and clears your session data.
